C1-C4 is a bit stupid. They have certainly made it easier by covering less ground. I can say this as i've done A level maths when it used to be P1-P3 plus 3 applied units, pre-2000 syllabus and am now studying the new syllabus. Back then you sat two-3hour exams in June of your final year and thats it, you're A level done. If you had a bad day you were screwed. So it was not only more work, but also tougher exams.
You can now even get away by only doing the basic applied modules i.e. S1, M1. I'm going through M1 right now and believe me, the books is soo thin and basic, you can get through it in a few weeks at a slow pace, no problems. M2 & M3 is where the real stuff began but you wont touch those unless you do Further'. S1 rehashes the GCSE stuff and throws in a little extra.
I didnt take my actual exams back then, had to leave school for other reasons. But i did lots of exams papers and an actual mock test (6 hours) under exam conditions and was on my way for an A. The current syllabus has been dumbed down to some extent imo.
Having said that, we shouldnt take shots at the current students, you can only do whats in front of you!
