When a university course says B or A in a certain subject at GCSE is required, say a B in a modern language for a Chinese Studies course, is this an actual set in stone requirement, or is it just a preferred choice?

As I did not take a modern language at GCSE, it has seemingly limited my options for University applications, so can other GCSEs or A-Level choices make up for this, as I am looking to apply for an East Asian language course?

    Thanks

If they say it is a requirement, then yes, it's set in stone. If they say it's "preferred" or an "advantage" than you have a chance without it.

If you're desperate to go to a uni where it's a requirement you could still do it during you A2 year (presuming you just finished AS)

If you do this, you will need to enter the grade as pending when you fill in your UCAS form. You will also need to state the year in which the exam is being taken (e.g. 2010).

This will probably also depend on how popular the course is - if it is in Clearing, then they will probably accept lower entry requirements.
