    Hey everyone,

I'm an American student with an offer from LSE. Unfortunately, if I go to LSE I'll need to borrow a lot of money! I've checked out LSE's website for American loans and they don't recommend any lenders but they do point you towards Sallie Mae and IEFC. While Sallie Mae does offer loans to study in a foreign country, I'd like to shop around at other lenders. Unfortunately, the lender's phone number on IEFC is incorrect or it takes you to Chase, which currently does not offer loans to foreign institutions (I suspect this is a consequence of the credit crisis). I asked for another lender from the Fee's Office, and they gave me another number (an org. called American Student Assistance) which turned out to only offer Graduate PLUS loans for foreign studies.

So, does anyone know of any U.S. lenders willing to offer a student loan to an English university? Will they also make private student loans in addition to any Stafford or Graduate PLUS loans? I think a lot of institutions have changed their student loan procedures for foreign universities due to the credit crisis, so any information would be very helpful!

Bank of America does Graduate Stafford and PLUS loans for international schools, but not private loans. Would you need a private loan? The PLUS loan would cover the entire cost of attendance.

I feel your pain. Getting loans has been a pain.

However I echo the above poster. Does it matter which lender you have if you get federal loans? Not really (they all have the same rate), plus they should cover all of cost of attendance (including living expenses).

But yeah - I went through Sallie Mae - just because they have an overseas division. Plus, they do offer a private loan option (I don't have one, but it is listed on their website).

That's not true, you can get a Stafford loan through them.
