My friend's dad quit his job giving music lessons because God had apparently 'told him' that he was spreading sin.
This girl's dad recently threw away her Lord of the Rings DVDs etc. Due to them being sins or something.

Religion and Atheism suck equally as bad. Check out the rates of depression and you'll find that atheists are more depressed. However religious people have rules and such to adhere to. If you're atheist you're basically saying life is by chance and there's nothing to look forward to etc. whereas religious people have either a huge carrot or a huge stick.

Well you could believe that the universe itself is eternal, but then that leads to some scientific problems.
The expansion of space itself, along with the theory of relativity both imply that time itself came into existence with the Big Bang, about 14 billion years ago (as discussed by Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking).
That's assuming there is nothing beyond the 3D universe we currently know about. For all we know that exists in a higher dimensional universe that is eternal. Or it could be god. Who knows.

Do you not think that maybe some people take comfort in that fact? That having something to believe in, no matter how ridiculous you think it is, helps them sleep at night, helps them find reasons, and helps then find answers when things don't make sense? So what?
Because it's illogical and counter-productive to society. If people just took scripture as fact, modern science would be pathetic compared to what it is now. And if religion hadn't interfered, we'd be a hell of a lot further advanced scientifically.
