uni/city environment
I don't know about uni unfortunately.

The city is a GREAT place to be. The city centre is buzzing, especially on Saturday, with live music at Grey's Monument, Northumbrian Pipes on Northumerland streets and usually entertainers and political stalls for colour! Lots of nice eateries, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Persian, Arabic, Greek, Korean you name it!

A WEALTH of clubs. Dance at Foundation and Ikon. Relaxing , stylish bars at Hoko-10 and Apartment, cheesy pop at Baja and Blu Bambu, r&b at Envy and Sea as well as soooo many other pubs bars and clubs. Best nightlife ever.

Cost - Said to be cheap! In the North East of England so cheaper than further south. Apparantly Northumbria Uni (which is in Newcastle) has the cheapest cost of living in the country for students, so Newcastle Uni mustn't be far off.

Uni has a very good reputation, it is very well established and attracts many people from all over the country and beyond.

Any other questions? I'll try my best to answer
No idea for those two uni's MBA reputations.

But Sheffield has a better general reputation for employability, banks and consulting companies recruit there more than Newcastle.

I'm sorry - I don't really know.

From a knee jerk reaction I get bad images when I hear the word Sheffield, but others will about Newcastle because of old out dated images. Most people I know have generally disliked Sheffield as a city apart from the nightlife which is said to be good. It also has a bigger population than Newcastle, but not sure how that works out in terms of city size.

By the way, where you from?

me working in singapore at the moment

is there lots of foreign students? the locals (Northumbrian?) have any problem with the fogeiners?

Newcastle doesn't have as large a foreign population as some cities, but recently there has been an explosion of ethnic minoritties here, which is really good :-) Many students go to Newcastle City Library, and most people who are in there are usually foreign.

You shouldn't have any problems with racism in Newcastle. I'm half Iranian and all I've had is a few 'Saddam's your uncle' jibes by silly kids at school. Newcastle city centre is very cosmopolitan and has a good mix of people. If anything, foreigners are probably preferred over southerners!

Locals in Newcastle are called Geordie(s). 'Northumbrian' applies to a much wider area more commonly called 'North East England.'

That's a very good site for tourist information, but also gives you an idea of Newcastle and the surrounding areas.

Having been a student at both, I would definitely say Sheffield for a nicer place to live in general. Sheffield also has a large international community, I don't know if Newcastle does or not I am afraid as I try not to visit the city too much

Why don't you like Newcastle?

The international community in Newcastle has increased a fair bit in the last 5 years.

Many reasons, but I won't go into too many details as I know I will get serveral replies, hey it is a great place

I was just giving my view as I have experiences of being a student at Sheffield for several years and I am now a student at Newcastle. In my personal opinion it would be Sheffield everytime.

Sheffield - city but feels like a big town, decent transport system, one of the best unions in the country (I am afraid I find Newcastles rather run down), next door to the peaks and able to ride quite easily from the city centre into the countryside without getting run over, decent computer facilities (I have the ones I have experienced at Newcastle to be very poor).

Newcastle - Fantastic Library compared to Sheffield, car parking is far easier than Sheffields.

Both - Very friendly people at both, both universites are thought highly of as a whole all though there can be massive difference between departments.

Well I think Newcastle is a city that feels like a town too. It has a very good and regular bus service as well as an underground system which I believe is one of only 3 in the UK.

I've been to both Newcastle and Northumbria unions and they both seemed run down, but especially Newcastle's. The city nightlife more than makes up for that but locals like myself take for granted the fact that they are already familiar with the city.

You need some peas pudding

Yo~ guys thanks for all the input
It feels great to get so many responses here.

However I have finally chosen to do my master course in University of Edinburgh which in my opinion enjoy better reputation and job prospect. Anyway you are welcome to comment on the differences between Edinburgh, Newcastle and Sheffield. :p:

Never been to Edinburgh but it looks beautiful and the uni certainly has a better reputation for most courses.
