    Assuming you are from England:

You will get a tuition fee loan, which pays the cost of your tuition that year - this goes direct to your University from the SLC and you don't have to worry about dealing with it.

You'll also get a maintenance loan, which is intended to cover things such as rent, food et al. This is paid to you, usually in three installments at the start of each term.

Depending upon your household income, you might also get an extra maintenance grant - which is yours and needn't be paid back at the end of your study.

All the above are from the Student Loans Company (aka Student Finance England) - you apply via their website.

In addition, Universities often offer bursaries etc depending on household income, academic performance etc.

As far as I know you need to do your UCAS application first so you know what your Firm and Insurance choices are, but you can't pick those until all your offers are through, so be prepared to wait past January.

After that the deadline is sometime in May/June or something, but it's done through local boards so they would have more specific information on that in the documentation or website themselves.

    Good luck with your UCAS!

It's now changed - LEAs aren't part of the process and everyone goes through a large centre over in Glasgow.

Thanks! I'm applying to Cambridge, though, so I think I have to send all the applications through UCAS by 15th October - could I apply at any time after that? Or would it be best to apply round about late January?
I think the most relevant aspect of the application is that you have to have your firm and insurance offers selected so they can go in the form. This is important as it can affect your entitlement!

As I see another poster has said, apparently local education authorities are no longer handling student finance, but either way it shouldn't change much when applying.

(it's worth saying I think Northern Ireland is staying the same by using LEA's but don't quote me on that)

Are you going to university this october? or next year?

You apply at http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/ and just fill it all in. You will need to remeber your alias id so your parents can support your application form.

The OP already said next year.

You can normally apply from about February.
