Do you think it matters if the college you are staying at also houses the subject you are doing? I am going to politics and thinking of going to Derwent, home of the politics department. But my concern is that I may find myself spending too much time in one place and not enough time experiencing the campus.
Should I consider this to be a disadvantage or not?

I studied Computer Science and was in derwent. I personally loved the college, reasonable bar, good events. In respect to your question i dont think it really matters. Are the accomodation places still randomly set? Mostly i guess it depends what you want out of your accomodation.

I also have to say I wouldn't worry about it. I did biochemistry so that means the subject buildings were independent of collages (and also on a side note at opposite ends of the campus). I have a couple of friends doing maths and I stayed in old Goodricke (R.I.P) which is the college the maths department is in. If anything they said it was an advantage as they only had to walk for about two minutes to get to stuff.

As far as experiencing the campus goes, I really wouldn't worry about it as when you have a lecture/tutorial etc you will just walk there and walk back. I can't say I felt any real advantage walking past Vanburgh and through Langwith to get to chemistry.

You will have to experience the rest of campus at some point Especially in first year, the bigger lecture theatres are a bit rarer (Physics/Biology/Alcuin have the biggest) so you're unlikely to have everything in there.

I know a few people who do Politics, and a lot of teaching takes place outside of Derwent, so i really wouldn't worry about it.
