I'm off inter railing tomorrow and just doing the last minute things. I've read that your meant to have a photocopy of important documents separate in your bag and one at home as well but what documents do I actually need to photocopy. All I can think of is my passport, is there anything else I should have a spare copy of?

EHIC, your ID, travel insurance, train tickets... Everything!

It's pretty pointless - a photocopy is never a substitute for the real thing. Generally insurance forms are online anyway, so can be printed off if lost. Tickets again are mostly electronic these days (and if not a photocopy wont help).

Only thing that may possibly be useful is your passport, though I've never found a photocopy useful myself.

Can you think of any circumstances when a photocopy would be useful?

It is useful. I tend to do it as a precaution. If you are travelling around third world countries, it can come into play if you issues with customs or border patrols. I've not had to resort to it personally, but I know people that have found it very helpful.
