    As you know, number plates change with the year. so XX09 and for after august XX95.

    but next year how will it work??? XX01?? and then 51 again??? or XX10 then XX510???

    i'm :confused: and is there a max number of characters on a Reg plate?

    The next new reg will be 59, followed by 10, 60, 11, 61, etc. all the way up to 49, 99. Then it'll be 50 reg in March 2050, followed by 01 to lead into 2051.

    They won't do 51 again, they'll have to think of something else, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (e.g. LL1 LLL) or something ridiculous like that :p:

    That's correct.

    The 01 series is being reserved for future auction purposes and will probably cost a bloody fortune when that happens. By 31st August 2050, DVLA will have to think up a new numbering system, but for now they have 41 years to sleep on it
