Should the more respected members (apparently) get more rep power? Watch

I'm sure this thread has been done before, but I couldn't find anything on a brief look. Anywho for those that know my username you probably noticed that this isn't my first whinge about rep points and how they are so badly flawed and let down the excellent TSR.

Most would agree (correct me if I'm wrong) that "power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely." Which means that people who get to the top end up becoming prejudice in their repping. I'm not claiming to be perfect and would struggle to promise that if I was were in a position of yellow, that I wouldn't end up neg repping people with extreme political views etc. Therefore we see an increase of a particular group of people becoming more prone to be highly repped. And in theory you will eventually get people with the same prejudices at the top. Of course there are people with different views at the top, but wouldn't it be more diverse and fair if everybody had the same power? Too often I see people on red that are as nice and pie and people that are on yellow who have a horrible, mean sense of humour.

Now I'm not saying that yellow and highly green repped people are bad people, not at all. But the link between red and yellow is like a yo-yo with very little improvement. If I started a thread which has 10 people rep me and one person who disagreed and neg repped me, I would lose a huge number of points if the neg repper happened to be 'popular'. Give everybody equal power to get a clear and fair picture.

Now, you’re probably going to ask, why do you care? It's only rep points. Well, true. But it inevitably makes people judge you. Especially new members who are unfamiliar to the rules. If you’re judged your posts are more likely to be ignored. If your on yellow your more likely to have your posts read. Under the current system, it really is madness!

Its recognition on an internet forum. I don't think those with a lot of rep are going to let the fact that they have more green gems go to their head and become "corrupt" its not like we have to power to bend the space time continum here :ninja:

To be honest, it seems (in my opinion atleast) that the people on here with very high rep seem to care a hell of a lot less about rep than people with less rep. In my experience its the people with 0 (or very low) rep power who are the quickest to neg for stupid reasons. People who have high rep have often been on here a long time and earned their rep, yet people who have been here for 2 weeks seem to have a hissy fit everytime they are negged for a stupid reason. Its happened to everyone.

People seem so caught up in it, and seem to aim so much for that little yellow gem. Its not really the fault of the system, its the fault of people who are actually stupid enough to judge the quality of what someone has to say based on whether they have 8 green gems, or a red one before actually reading their post. The system shouldnt have to be changed to compensate for the fact that people cannot use their own common sense.

Personally I treat most people on here with the same level of respect regardless of whether they are in the red of have 3 yellow gems. If their post is good, its good, if its bad its bad, rep is irrelivant.

Its a shame and it does happen, but again its not the systems fault there its the fact that people are stupid.

Your missing my point. How am I supposed to earn it when one persons power can overule 10 people's view?

Because that one person earned the right by making good posts etc. Why should you have as much rep as i have when you've been here and done nothing?

It reminds me of a cartoon mountation. One hours work takes you 10,000 steps forward and 1 minutes work can take you 50,000 steps back.

Searching in the correct forum (About The Student Room) will give you plenty of results discussing the apparent flaws of the rep system, which the mod team fully acknowledge...repeating the moans doesn't really solve anything, though. Thread closed.
