But when you move into halls do you put all your clothes in suitcases or boxes or bags? Obviously I'd need a small suitcase for going home at weekends ect, but do I REALLY need one or two huge suitcases to move all my stuff into halls?

How will you be transporting your stuff?

A mixture of carrying devices. I moved them in a car, my slaves were busy.

You can get boxes that fold flat, or of course bags will fold flat. This will save lots of space in what could be a very small room.

2 huge suitcases; one for kitchen/living stuff and one for clothes and bedding. And then a few smaller bags for general rubbish that i'm bound to take.

I don't think suitcases are the best job. Take one small/medium sized one for when you'll be returning home again, and use it for storage when you arrive there (put it under the bed with some towels or sheets in it?)

Plastic boxes (especially under bed storage ones) are really handy, but only if you have the space for them in your room. Otherwise bin liners and card board boxes are best because you can dispose of them once you're done. Use what is convenient to you
