How does skirmish and multiplayer work? Do you select troops beforehand or something?
You get a single base building with crazy hit points. The gametypes are normally control point based rather than destroy everything in order to promote real tactical and strategic play other than build dudes and send dudes to go die. You get the money type resource from holding points and power from holding power points and building nodes on them.

You can have I think a maximum of 10 units or squads at any one time. Was a bit weird at first but it's actually better as it means you have to tailor your forces to suit your style of play and to counter your enemy, instead of building massive armies of termies and land raiders and just rushing. Rushing gets no where because you get maimed by enemy base turrets, so it's all about taking and holding points and making sure you can defend any point that may be contested.

Get Fallout 3! Also the bonus packs; so much fun
Prototype is great fun, a bit like InFamous but with more claws
If you're after something a bit different, I really recommend Mirror's Edge; it's exhilarating to play, and there's lots of replay value in finding better routes.
Mass Effect is great if you're after a really sprawling RPG.
