Starting out with the contraceptive injection

I've not spoken to my GP about this yet. I will do soon though.

I've never been on the pill, I've had sex in the past, and just used condoms. I'm not currently sexually active, nor am i planning on being as such in the near future. However, things happen, so I want to be safer. I'd like to go on the pill, but there are issues with my dad not wanting me to take them (nothing religious, just very complicated and hard to explain personal reasons). I'd rather he didn't find out. I'm also notorious for forgetting to take medication!

What I'm asking is basically would a GP let me start with the contraceptive injection without trying the pill form first? Obviously I'd speak to him in more detail about what's best, but from my reading up on it, I think the injection would be best.

Oh, and I know I'm 18 and at the end of the day it's up to me, but it's an avenue I would like to avoid if at all possible.

Dunno, they'd quite possibly be unwilling to (I asked about implants and they said to try the pill first). Explain the situation and they might understand though.
When I first went to the gynocologist she recommended both the pill and the injection(here in the US its called Depo Provera i think). I personally, wouldn't start on the injection because you should probably see how your body reacts to the hormones. Plus, I haven't heard many great things about it, I have a couple friends who've tried it and said that the weight they gained was crazy. If you can't remember pills you could ask about the patch or Nuvaring.

I started on the injection a year ago because I'm not allowed to go on the pill. My body has only just got used it and although it's very convienient, I am getting really fed up with some of the side-effects! x x x
What kind of side effects do you get? I'm on the pill at the moment but was considering inquiring about the ingection next time i see my doctor.

I had bleeding every day for about 6/7 months but that's stopped now. I tend to feel very low for a week after I've had the jab. A lot of people will moan about putting on weight but that's because you get an increased appetite. This can be solved by filling up on veggies and fruit. It's a shame though cos it really is so convienient.

Do you mind me asking why you weren't allowed to go on the pill? Is there some health difference between the pill and injection?

Why on earth would you do that to yourself?!!!

Thanks everyone.

All I can really do is speak to the doctor and then decide. Hm.

I would say one thing - if you're not having sex it's an ever great disincentive to take the ill regularly. I thought that - why bother if I'm not even having regular sex?

Well if you take the pill you are covered in case you are in a position where you have unplanned sex and don't have condoms. The injection of course you don't even have to worry about taking pills regularly. I personally like using the pill because it gives me more control over when I have periods.

Unless you're on the 'mini' pill, like me, then you have absolutely no control over your periods, which is really annoying  But i can't be on the 21 day one so i just have to deal with it!
