In my jan AS bio exam I got 74 UMS marks which was an A, the test was out of 60 so I wanted to know if there is any way of deciphering what 74 UMS marks means in the context of this exam, thanks.

No, because the whole point of UMS is that it is scaled. So if the exam in January were comparatively easy then one might need 60 raw marks /60 to get 100 UMS but if it was uncharacteristically difficult then 100 UMS might equate to 55/60.

You can't calculate your raw score unless you have the tables which the exam board used to work out the UMS.

Anyway, it doesn't matter a jot what your raw mark was, as it's your UMS which goes towards your grades, so finding out your mark out of 60 would just be a curiosity.

Which exam board/specification was it on? Some exam boards have published the grade boundaries for January 2009 exams on their websites, so you can find out from them.
