I've applied for a few myself, i'm 16 though, and they advised me to send in a letter as to why i wish to do work experience there/what interests me about law etc and a CV. So i did, and i got a phonecall an hour ago but i was out so i've gotta phone up tomorrow  It seems promising...

Best thing to do is to go down to the offices themselves, that way they can't ignore you :P

The way I got it was through my dad's friend, so try and see if you have some contacts

Smith Partnership and M&M Solicitors.

Smith would be hard to get, they said they said they do W/E rarely. M&M had loads for W/E, I saw their calender! Although be warned, its boring as sh**. Smith were much better, letting me do actual law stuff, like trying to tackle an ASBO.

Both these firms are criminal defence (deffo not my first choice), but W/E anywhere would be awesome

you know when writing about work experience and shadowing placement with Barristers etc, do we have to declare the companies details to ucas to prove it ?

I enquired about Smith partnership but they said pretty much what you just did - obviously it's all about who you know  I seen M&M on the list of Solicitors but i didn't enquire... I applied for erm, Oliver D'sa, Harvey Ingram and Cartwright King and only Oliver D'sa has replied yet  Shall tell you more tomorrow morning after my phonecall!

Seeing as it is so hard to get a job, I might as well get some relevant work experience under my belt. I was such a fool, when we had to do 3 weeks of work experience in year 12 I was dead against the idea of entering law. But now I've realised that law is what I want to do. I have no idea how to go about getting some work experience either.
Apply to your local Courts.

I'm 16 with no previous law experience and I got placements at the Magistrates' Courts and the Crown Court in my local area!

They actually have people designated to organising work experience weekly, it's also a great insight into your potential future. You just need to seem enthusiastic and you're in.

Hope that was helpful.

To find out, find the number of your local courts, phone one up asking for work experience - most likely they'll say no. If they do, ask for the numbers of some local law firms - they always have them. Thats what i did, then hone them asking for a weeks experience, they'll usually ask for say a CV and a letter explaining why you want to do it at their firm and what interests you in law.

Good luck.

where is that if i may ask? i am 16 too and looking for law related w/e. I have found some for October half-term, when i will be 17, in London. However, this is part of some scheme that the company is organizing and most of the people participating would be from colleges or unis.

Alright say I ring crown court the civil justice centre in Manchester, ask for work experience, if they say no, then i contact law firms. Law firms I can do, I know a few. What kind of things did you state in your letter and cv?

Oh I see. So other than writing about doing the work exp on the PS, we don't have to mention it elsewhere? Only my work exp wasnt really official it was through a friend not exactly a proper placement so I'm hoping they dont ask details....

I think law work experience is more about showing that you're willing to go out your way to learn something about the field, as opposed to 'ooo look where I did my work experience'. They're probably after different types of placements - barristers chambers are notoriously difficult to get into and many high street firms won't take under 18s because of the confidentiality thing. I'm struggling to get past the odd week here and there.
I didn't bother, unlikely to have been successful. Connexions are clearly lame.

...but it doesn't really put you at an advantage when it comes to personal statements though.

Why's that, is it like one of the best law firms or something? I've got a reply from Oliver D'Sa already, need to phone up tomorrow, however i don't expect a reply from Cartwright and King, and Harvey Ingram i doubt it now what you've just said
