People are only as they are defined by society. :erm:
Not really. People are not born equal even without a pre-existing hierarchy. Society will inevitably define which is your mother tongue and what it expects of people, and so on and so forth, but people are not purely blank slates, equal by nature.

:lovie: Actually, no. But, since you recommended it to me, I have been on the lookout for it EVERYWHERE. I drag my friends around bookshops and charity shops all the time looking for it. I haven't been able to find it yet  And I don't really want to order it online cos mum gets annoyed at me buying non-uni related stuff online.

But society can change. What you are now may not be the same tomorrow. Throughout history such change has been a common occurence especially in change of social hierarchy.

If you had a child and I killed you and raised your child to be equal to all the other children then they're all equal. A bittersweet thought isn't it?

I think you're missing my point. People are not innately equal, unless you clone them all or give everyone a certain genetic modification to remove all natural diseases and turn everyone into a super-intelligent whatever.

Show me a civilisation where all people have been equal. There hasn't been one.
Equality is, perhaps, a relative concept, but in terms of abilities & character, people are certainly not equal.
People and society are ever-changing in different ways, but inequality is a constant. Inequality & competition need not be for the worse, either.

As for your last comment... you're wrong. Despite raising a child to seem and think they are equal, it does not make them equal. Indoctrination and conditioning of that sort only creates and illusion of artificial equality.
