Skimming through the rules handbook for halls of residence and it mentions that the halls use Resnet. A friend of mine who is at another university that uses resnet and he says that he cannot use skype there. Does skype work at Portsmouth in Halls?

The cable just about stretches to the beds (well for JW it does).
And it is possible to get wireless but its a bit hit and miss.

Also is that Jamie T I see on your avatar?

A cat5 cable from Amazon is really cheap anyway, so not impossible to use in bed, if you really want to. I got a 20m cable for £6 when I was in a student house.

Don't buy it in town though cos you'll pay about £10 for a couple of meters which probably won't be enough

Xbox live is decent on halls connections... Although from my experience expect to be offline at least 1/3 of the year. Think that was due mainly to faulty cabling in my room though, none of my mates in Traf had any problems. Plus the uni IT bods seem to get stumped by anything beyond Google - I think his words were; "hmm, that flashy bit there means no connection, must be something in the wiring or summit, ah well"

When I was in halls there were no problems.

We were the first year that they gave ADSL for free to residents, and we were meant to be getting 10mb connections, except they screwed it up and we got 100mbs. Wasn't really useful for me except downloading music.

Well, does it really matter? I mean, if the net is crap what alternative do you have?

I didn't use xbox live in halls but I would presume it is pretty good because they have a 1GB pipe. Though, you only get 10mbps of that
