Hey People

I'm going to Blackpool this coming weekend and hope to go in the sea for a swim. But I have heard bad things about the sea there. If anyone who has been there and can tell me about it, I will be grateful.

thanks

Katie

It is cold.

It is not called 'black'pool for nothing you know! When I was last in Blackpool, I saw people swimming in it, but to be honest, since I am used to the beaches in Cornwall (cleanest in the country), I wouldn't set foot in the water at Blackpool.

Ok as I understand it the beach in Blackpool is very clean it has won awards for its cleaness.

However the underlying rocks are a blacky colour (hence Blackpool) so the when the sun is shining it looks grey/dirty its not, its just the rock colour.

In devon/cornwall the underlying rocks are clearler (a whitey colour) so when the sun is shining the sea looks very clean and blue.

The sea is probably cleaner there as well.
Definately wouldn't go for a swim in it. It is alot cleaner than in previous years, but still I go to the Swimming pool alot cleaner.

me and my friends went to blackpool last year and had a really good time - we even spent whole days in the sea!
Yes, it doesn't look a particularly pleasant colour but none of us are dead yet so it can't be all bad.

Slightly off topic but I am the only person who dosn't get Blackpool? It might be becuase I have been quite a bit there is no novelty to me. I prefer Southport, its quiter but there is a lot less scallies/chavs and its nicer. Paris was actually based on Southport.

I would love to go to the beaches of Cornwall and Devon but its so far away (300 miles compared to 40 for Southport).

http://www.visitsouthport.com/student/history.php

It's a little known fact but Prince Louis Napoleon lived on Lord Street, the main thoroughfare of Southport, before becoming Emperor of France in 1851. Just a year later, no doubt inspired by his stay in the town, he set his prefect of the Seine, Baron George Haussman, to work redesigning Paris. Much of the medieval centre of Paris was replaced with broad tree lined boulevards, covered walkways and arcades, just like Lord Street.

So modern day Paris is in fact based on Lord Steet, Southport.
