His constituents voted for him as their MP.

Same way Tony Blair's did for him and he became PM by being leader of the party. You don't vote for the PM.

look, i think the crux of the gordon brown is as follows:

obama = cool black guy everyone respects

brown = old fat guy no-one wanted in power and everyone disparages

i think therefore we should therefore become pirates and mutinyy!!!1

To become leader of a political party, you're normally voted for by someone. Normally MPs, rank and file party members; often both. For example, David Cameron and Tony Blair were both voted for by party members. Theoretically, anyone can vote in these.

Brown was elected uncontested (John McDonnell failed to secure enough votes because Labour MPs were too career conscious) having fought a fairly nasty campaign to oust Tony Blair. He became PM because it was his turn.

And by then (when he walked into 10 Downing Street as PM) it was too late. He had sown the seeds of damage in his Chancellor days, attempting to do damage to the system which, it was hoped, would be 'irreversible' by the next Conservative government. Luckily, because they don't have a great track record of getting things right, the situation can still be salvaged.

Brilliant. I don't mind him. But would prefer Cameron. Can they not dig up William Gladstone or Benjamin Disraeli and give them the PMship and one the Opposition....ship?

He's an uncharismatic *******, I'll give you that. He's a devious toerag too. But crap at PR? He's so far managed to cling to his job despite a disastrous tenure at number 10.

Examples of Gordon Brown succeeding at PR:
Fending of Milliband's clumsy leadership bid
    The G20 summit

Examples of Gordon Brown failing at PR:
    The famous 'smiling' youtube video
    Bottling the November election

Examples of Gordon Brown succeeding at Government:
I'm sure there are some. I just have to think of them. He did ok with foot and mouth. Oh, actually he did rather well on abortion rights. Credit to him there.

Examples of Gordon Brown failing at Government:
Abolishing the 10p tax band (bright idea: I know who doesn't pay enough tax! The poor!)
Waging a bizarre vindictive campaign against civil liberties including such fun policies as 42 days and ID cards.
Allowing the arrest of an opposition MP
Ignoring scientific advice (and in fact having members of his government attack the scientists) regarding reclassification of ecstasy.
Ignoring scientific advice regarding reclassification of cannabis.
    and many many more.

Probably one of the best rivalries in history, to be fair.

He didn't fend it off. He didn't have to. Milliband simply said that he wanted it - he shot himself in the foot to the point where he was never going to get it. It seems to be Alan Johnson being touted as the next in line now.
