Mostly, because alot of the time people dont have anywhere to live in their uni city/town. (For first year especially, second and third year people tend to stick around more)

Even when people do have somewhere to stay though they still want to see family/friends and so on, so alot of people go home for a period of time atleast. Only a handful of people (at my uni) didnt go back home during easter holidays and over christmas (during first year) but they were mostly international students.

In my experience though, people dont tend to go home for the entire summer. They usually stick around for a couple of extra weeks after the end of term, go home for a few weeks, maybe a month then return to uni early way before term starts.

From what I know, most people go home during holidays, and only a handful stay, and that's usually for work reasons. Older students I know seem to be the ones who stay. Most go home so mummy and daddy can do their washing and feed them and stuff, which is fair enough, but a lot of money tends to be wasted on empty accommodation that they're paying for.

I used to split my time in the holidays between uni and home during 2nd and 3rd year when I had accommodation at uni. Ended up at home for most of holidays during 3rd year I had planned to stay more during the holidays however my housemate stayed and I had to get away from him because he was unbearable. Tends to be a real mix though, depending on family situations/relationships, location of friends, finances etc.

My hometown is 40mins away from manc, but I work full time over summer, and its better to stay in halls to get to work than go from home.
