I know this guy, it's complicated, I won't go into the details.
But he'll ignore me for months at a time like I've done something wrong and then he'll come back all happy and sweet and talk to me constantly so it goes from nothing to everything basically (if you get me :s)
Is there a reason why he would do this? He does it all the time...

hes using you, he'll be your friend when it suits him,
you should either tell him where to go or explain to him that you dont like being ignored...
I would just ignore him when he does talk nicely

If it's complicated and there are 'details', it's likely that it'd help if you explained more otherwise we won't know possible reasons why he'd do it. :\
Have you asked him about it?
