By Indie, I'm going to try and stick to real indie, i.e. none of that commercialised, playlisted :snow::snow::snow::snow: that is/was always on the radio. Might have to chuck my favourite Oasis song in there though. :p:

Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
Los Campesinos - You! Me! Dancing!
This Charming Man - The Smiths
    Song 2 - Blur
    Some Might Say - Oasis
    Tulips - Bloc Party

I'm sure nobody in this thread has pissed on about the use of indie to describe artists not on an independent label.

I felt tempted to, trust me lol. You won't get someone more muso than me; I've worked part time at a record label & its generally something that really grinds my gears. But let's face it, our indie is a different definition to most people's indie. Whenever I bang on about it I usually get hate/stick for it.

Scouting for girls - Epic records =/= Indie
The Kooks - Virgin records =/= Indie
The Killers - Vertigo (UMG) =/= Indie

Bloc Party - Wichita recordings = INDIE
Arctic Monkeys - Domino = Indie (although Domino are getting pretty big now)
The Go! Team - can't remember the label but they're on about 20 different indie labels = Indie

Also, you've got to consider how hardly any major artists now are not signed to major labels. It's where all the advertising and publicity is, and with corporates backing you I guess you've lost your 'independance' as an artist.

Yeah there are different definitions for indie and that's my point really, the label of 'indie' is so vague and has become such an umbrella term that complaining about different usage's is a bit pointless.

It's a shame, isn't it? Indie means everything and anything now. I decided to change my hairstyle once and someone asked if I was going to have it 'all indie'. I think I died a little inside that very moment.

It is quite sad, yes. Someone I met thought they were indie because they were wearing a cardigan, it was heartbreaking. But I think we should care more about the music than genre terms.

Anything by Los Campesinos! or The Decemberists.
Also, We Will Become Sillhouettes by The Postal Service and Tegan and Sara.

Although, on reflection all of these could be described as 'Alternative' but who really cares for this compartmentalisation of music?
    YES!

On a side note, arguing about what should and should not be classified as 'Indie' music is a complete waste of time. There is no set defintion for 'Inide', just as there is no definite interpretation of what Prog Rock or Hard Rock is. All these classifications are totally subjective; so stop attempting to achieve these categorical, objective truths about Indie - because it's never going to happen. Admittedly, people opinions can be changed, so there's no harm in discussing what you perceive as 'Indie' music and what the best 'Indie' songs are; but ultimately, you need to accept everyone's contrasting opinions, however different to yours they may be.
    Peace and Love.
    Excellent choices.

    Here is my short list:

    The Smiths:
    These Things Take Time
    The Queen Is Dead
    Still Ill
    What Difference Does It Make?
Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before

Foals: Total Life Forever - such a stunning album.
