I really like just mellowing out with some intelligent, melancholy rap and hip hop atm. Artists like Jehst and Common.

Does anyone have any other artists they can recommend?

Lupe Fiasco (unique and original - fresh breath in urban world)
Immortal Technique (not everyone's cup of tea - but very intelligent and thoughtful lyrics)

    Wise intelligent
(i.e. thoughtful tune called 'globe holders')
Klashnekoff (unconventional subjects and tight beats)
Nas (cant go wrong with him much - legendary)

    Other names to mention:
    Twalib Kweli
    Mos Def
    Black Star
    The Roots
    Q-Tip
    De La Soul
    A Tribe Called Quest
    Consequence

    Melancholy

Immortal Technique - evocative, strong lyrics...as aforementioned, "Dance With The Devil" - it is probably the most distressing song I've heard in a while.

Talib Kweli ("Good Mourning", "Eternalists" and "Expansion Outro" from the Reflection Eternal album Train of Thought; "Beautiful Struggle" and "Going Hard" from his solo album The Beautiful Struggle)

    Blu & Exile

Notorious B.I.G ft. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - "Notorious Thugs"
Naughty by Nature - "Mourn You Til I Join You"
Wu-Tang Clan - "Life Changes" and "Tearz"
    Nas - "Dance", "One Mic"

    Intelligent

Mos Def (Black on Both Sides is a must-have)
    GZA (Liquid Swords. 'Nuff said.)
Canibus (He's erratic but his wordplay is so deep you'll drown)
    Cormega
    Jedi Mind Tricks

    -

Hope some of that fulfils your criteria!

Masta Ace - Beautiful (I think one of the best hip hop songs EVER created and yet he is so underrated! You reallllllly need to hear this tune)
    Masta Ace - H.O.O.D
Giggs Feat the Streets - Slow Songs
(I feel like im promoting this song but I want it to do well in the charts - its raw hardcore great UK Rap)

    Also for intelligent lyrics Sway
