Ok, i'm gonna wait for the text to come, then I can without a doubt cancel. Phones 4 U wont take my handset back as it's mine and Orange are the ones who deal with my contract etc, so yeah thats all good. Just go to wait *patiently* for the text =)
You may not ever get the text. From what I gathered they were only sending the text to people who go over their minutes allowance or use 0870 numbers (and are hence affected). No reason why you shouldn't be able to cancel.

I got told by a couple of operators that it should be sent to EVERY customer as a legal thing, but, if i don't get it within the next couple of days then I shall complain

I cancelled my contract this morning, but on my account page on the Orange website it still says I am in contract until October 2010. Does anyone think I need to call again, or will this be updated eventually?

Are you sure you're not paying for the Orange Care thing? My mate has that where for an extra £6 a month they basically insure it.

I recieved my PAC code today

They sent me a letter saying 'please don't leave, we've got loads of great plans for you' even though I wouldn't be able to change my contract until next February!

I just phoned up and it took literally 2 minutes. A lovely scottish gentleman helped. It really depends who you get through to. He tried to persuade me to stay with more minutes etc. and said cancelling may affect credit checks in the future which I think was a lie really. And then that was it.

I encourage you all to do it :-)

Did you receive the text? This would be really useful to get out of my contract as I'm moving into a basement flat next month and I can't get signal in my room, but my flatmates who are on O2 and Vodafone can...

No I didn't get the text I just told him I had, he didn't question it. I don't think it matters if you have or not, the fact is the prices are still going up and you know about it, whether they told you or not.

    Phone them now!

Just cancelled and will receive my Pac code in the next few days by post. I said I had received the text and wanted to jump ship. Took me thirty seconds to negotiate the 'please stay' bit and it was sorted.

well the contract was 25 a month but i wanted it insured for 5 quid extra a month, so thats 30 quid. but im getting charged 35 most months, sometimes its 32, others its 36. its never consistent.

Do you think it is possible once the contract is cancelled to get a new one with Orange (keeping the same number)? They do have good plans :p:

Yes, but it's not like everything they've said so far is true, is it?

My housemate managed to get out of his contract yesterday. He got his phone from Carphone Warehouse. The contract was £35 a month with a free phone and a free PS3. He does not have to send the phone or the PS3 back to Orange or CPW. If your contract is with Orange, but you originally got it from CPW, then it doesn't matter; you can still cancel by calling Orange.

He had to call about 4 times. Each time he got told a different reason why he couldn't cancel. These are the reasons they tried to fob him off with:

    - You didn't receive the text, therefore you can't cancel.
    - The new terms and conditions don't affect your contract, therefore you can't cancel.
    - You can't cancel without sending us back your phone.
    - You can't cancel until 1st September

All of them aren't true. They're obviously trying to limit their losses - mainly by lying to their customers. Fact of the matter is, the new ToCs affect everyone who took out contracts before May this year. No matter what price plan or phone, no matter if they received a text message or not. You're legally allowed to end your contract if they change the ToCs to your detriment, you just have to keep trying until they eventually give in. Ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary. If the customer services agent is rude to you, get their name and ask to speak to their supervisor
Just a warning, don't be surprised if he gets a phonecall or letter from CPW.

The reason third parties can sell contracts and make a profit is because they receive commission every month for each contract. Obviously, once you cancel the contract, they don't get the commission anymore, and so aren't making money. And depending on the phone and contract length, could actually have lost money if they let you keep the phone.

I have no idea if he will actually end up being contacting by them, I just wouldn't be surprised if he is.
