Also joining the conversation a bit late admittedly but I used to live in liverpool and actually, the shoddy parts are the streets I remember the most because it kind of defines liverpool? Maybe its just cos I'm studying architecture but I would think of it like a constant reminder that theres such a class and culture difference in that city that you aren't going to find in london. But people up there don't necessarily care about that anyway, people there are a less "standoffish" than down south for sure. You grow to like it.
