im wanting to use my basher for DofE silver, but the person running it says no because 'i'll be breaking away from the group', which makes no sence to me, as she is saying to use 2 man tents instead of 2 man basher...

Trust me, when the good old British weather kicks in and you get battered by torrential rain in the middle of the summer... you'll be appreciative of a tent rather than a basher :P

the main problem i have is the weight, the tents weigh a ton, and dont pack small, basher is small and light.
also its the fact that we are meant to be planning and doing all of this, but we dont get any opinion.

I agree, everyone else has managed with a tent since they started it, they'd change the rules or something and make it a basher if it was a better idea.

I just got back from walking the coast to coast, definitely use a tent.

NEVER trust the English weather, especially in the hills.

Edit- it is better to carry some weight than to have all your stuff soaked and to freeze every night.

I'm probably going to be the only one who's going to say use a basher. Mainly because, I have used tents and bashers and have prefered bashers everytime.

All the people who say "you'll get battered by the weather" etc. - if you do it properly, it provides just as effective a shelter from the elements as a decent tent, and at a fraction of the weight, inconvenience and cost. Of course, if you can't set up a decent basher for ****, then you're going to suffer but oh well.

Besides, bashers look so much more ally anyway

I've always been a fan of the hammock and tarp/groundsheet approach - simply string your hammock up, and tie a groundsheet up to make a roof and sides

A basher - or to give it its authentic spelling, "basha" - is basically a sheet of tarpaulin with eyelets around the edges, through which you thread bungee cord and attach to trees in close proximity. Thus providing you with shelter (and in a situation where it's necessary, an ideal covert OP).
