Right well this girl I met , she likes me but I don't like her. She's not particularly good looking either , although I don't just judge people by her looks. Well she doesn't really think she's good looking , and to an extent she isn't. but I've told her she's really pretty to boost her confidence which it has , but she now thinks she's sexy and the best and is being really vain because I told her she's pretty .

Was I wrong to say that's she pretty , when I don't think she is ?. I was only trying to boost her confidence , and I have to an extent , but she's going over the top. I mean it's not as if I'm going to tell her she's ugly .

What should I have done ?

Say it. But she she comes onto you, just tell her, she's really pretty but you don't see her like that. Be gentle with her.

edit: Okay, you could take her down a bit, but still I maintain you have to be careful.

Well you cant take it back now without looking like an idiot and hurting her. Best thing to do is to tell her how you feel about her, let her down with out hurting her. Tell her straight asap so you dont string her along at all.

Been non-specific, of course. The mentality of, "I can't possibly say something horrible so I'll say something nice!!111!" is a bit of a fail since you didn't consider a neutral comment and now it's backfired.
