Blood tests

I just got some of my results from a blood test. They test for three things and I haven't got a clue what they meant and neither did the receptionist.

There's something about liver functions, something about blood count, and something about serum. Does anyone know what they mean?

My liver thing is fine, my blood count needs to be redone in two weeks, and my serum thing hasn't been looked at by the doctor yet.

Also, anyone know why they wouldn't know what my blood count is?

Liver functions - don't know.
Serum is plasma (the watery stuff), maybe they're just checking what's in it
Blood count is probably how many red and white cells you have.

Then again, I don't really have a clue, just guessing.

never fear, jamie is here

LFT - checks liver functions, test liver enzymes etc. basically will book looking for hepatitis signs in your case (most common liver damamge in youngster....plus is transmittable....) it also means you can put into context the blood count...

Blood count - looks at red and white blood cells. can show if you anaemic, and give an indication as to WHY you are anaemic. can also show/indicate if there is an infection (raised wbc) or something a bit more....serious.

Serum - basically looking at biochemistry of blood - sodium, pottasium levels etc, plus vitamin levels, and urea, bilirubin, creatinine. will tell you that your kidneys are all tip top or not, and another indication of any problems regarding liver.
