yeeeh should be!! but i hope i get placed before then! what kind of camp you looking for?

me too..it would save a lot of money not having to go there!!
I want to be on a sporty camp/camp with lots of animals if there is...
I'm looking for coaching hockey, but don't know how popular this is, I am really regreting not talking about swimming, since It was a part of my PE GCSE and i've done survival and thing, but hadn't done life guarding.
what about you?
I've been rejected :frown: They said they would be unable to find me placement, I don't know why. gutted. Everyone I know said they thought I'd be exactly what they were looking for, apparently not.
Willow, what experience do you have?

I play football, rugby and tennis and badminton for my college, badminton for the university, I coach my college team. I am my college sports and fitness rep, I used to captain the badminton team. I've been through all the girl guides system including 4 years as a young leader, and have lots of experience of guide camps. I play 2 instruments and have years of orchestral experience. I am on track to get a 1st in master of maths at durham, i received an academic scholarship at the end of 2nd yr. My interview went well. I am generally an outgoing and friendly individual. I am 20 years old. I thought I did enough to be a good general counselor. Perhaps my lack of qualifications let me down, I don't know. They are sending me a letter with their 'reasons'. I just didn't expect for them not to even give me a chance.

what track and field do you do?
I used to do hurdles in school, and 800m.
I applied back in aeptember, but it didnt start circulating till the beginning of November. I aslo hate the waiting...
I wonder how many people acctually end up with no placement?
Mine isn't weak at all, coz I've been coaching on summer camps and in amsterdam this year. and done work experience at a school.
have you got Facebook? it would be nice to know somebody at the fair, coz I'll be on my own

I just got placed! I'm so excited now!

I went to the recruitment fair last year (I applied for CA but was not accepted!) and my advice to anyone that is going to go is GET THERE EARLY! I dunno what time it is starting this year but last year it started at 2, I got there for 11.30-12 and was near the front of the queue. If you get there at 2 or later, your chances of getting placed are lessened because they go quite quickly! Also, if you havn't already, try and have your interview and your sencond set of applications filled in before the recruitment fair! They put you into two lines before you go in, one line for those who had compleated the whole application stage and one for those who hadn't had their interview. If you havn't had it then you have to sit through a presentation and you don't get into the fair until 2.30-3pm which sucks if you have been waiting there for hours like I had. So yeah, there are my tips!

Basically what happened was I applied like a week before the recruitment fair so my application wasn't up and running until mid march/early april. Because there were so many applications that year they had to close them early and couldn't find a lot of people places. With my application, my interviewer saidt hat my skills were fine, not brilliant but enough to get me a place but because I applied so late and there were so many applicants I just didn't stand a chance. I passed my interview, compleated my second application and paid the crb and second deposit and was told to wait it out! I emailed a few camps but by that time they had mostly all finished hiring. Then camp america said they would let everyone know by 1st June whether we would go on ready steady go or be removed from the programme and I was removed =[ I got all my money back quite quickly after and a lovely email encouraging me to apply this year and spend the summer improving my skills! So I did and I applied early and here I am, placed and leading an activity! Waheyyy!

So yeah my little tip is don't be disheartened if you don't get placed at the recruitment fair. Hundreds of camps operate through camp america and only a handful are represented at the fair and a lot of them are looking for specific genders, skills and start dates! Get to the fair early, try and have your interview before hand and take a few copies of your application, your references and certificates and be confident and enthusiastic!
Oh and yeah, its gonna be freezing! I went to the fair in manchester last year and it SNOWED!! It was so cold so wear layers and take drinks with you! It will be really warm inside though because hundreds of people go! It will be so busy so make sure you look at the floor plan on the CA website before you go, make a note of the camps you want to see and go straight to the tables. Don't waste time dawdling!
Hey all, Ive been looking at the Camp America forum but gutted that I cannot post nothing. I applied on Sunday (13th Dec) do you think this is late? My interview is on 10th January. Will my app be completed by 30th January (London recruitment fair)?? I really want to go.

I have had a lot of experience with youth work, volunteer work/charity work. I hope I get placed.

How hard is it to get placed at the fair?

Thanks in advance

Camp America would accept you. I would assume the reason CCUSA/BUNAC did not is because they generally only accept people that are guaranteed to get placed.

In fairness, this will be the worst recruiting year in a long long time. I can imagine a huge amount of people not being placed this year.

I would assume for CCUSA and BUNAC the fact you don't appear to have a lot of experience with children is what let you down. It is more important that your actual skills to be good with and have experience with children.

Good luck though!

My interviewer said it would be better than last year. I got given a refund when CA started giving them out because they couldn't place people. I hope its better this year!

Camp America did not accept me. I might apply to CCUSA now. Would I have more chance as support staff? Not really what I want to do but better than nothing... The CCUSA website said there are less places going this year so I guess they had to be more selective.
No idea why your interviewer said that. Speaking to many camps that is simply not so. Last year was kind of bad, this year, more camps than ever are simply deciding just not to hire any international staff at all. This year will be worse than last.

It's up to you, its worth trying CCUSA first. I did not know CA were being so selective this year though!

It should be =] Basically, after your interview your second application will be available to complete. Your interviewer will tell you to get this compleated within a week and the quicker you do it, the quicker your application will be online! Get your references sorted before your interview if poss and do the second app as soon as its up and you should be circulating by the 30th! Even if you arn't, you can still go to the recruitment fair! And you will be allowed in quicker if you have had your interview so don't worry!

And you should get placed, last year was a very difficult year because of the overwhelming number of applicants! This year is supposed to be better and you're applying bang on time I think! Anytime after january is cutting it fine imo  You should get placed so good luck =]

Erm well at the fair it can be a little difficult because camps there are looking for very specific people. Some will just want male councillors, some will want coucillors over the age of 20 and most will be looking for specialist councillors rather than general councillors though there are always a few who are looking for general councillors! The trick is to look at the list which CA post of all the camps attending and on the list if you click on the camps, it will tell your where they will be sitting and what positions they will be looking for so you can be prepared! Don't waste time talking to camps if they do not have the position you want on their little board over their booth. They will usually turn you away. So good luck, its gonna be busy! Get their early, be prepared and wrap up warm!

Try Camp Leaders! They are cheaper than Camp America and Bunac and I'm pretty sure that if you pass the interview then you are supposed to be guarenteed a place (though last year this wasn't the case for many but that was because of the unusually huge amount of applicants!) You sound like a great applicant, maybe try and get more experience with kids though because that is generally seen as more important! If you're still unsuccessful, do what I did. I didn't get placed for the summer just gone and so I spent the whole summer getting more experience with children and in my skills and then applied early! Don't give up, just do everything that you can!

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Im going to try and get my references done by the first week in January so it can be completed by 10th and then I will fill out the second part to the app as soon as I get it.

Roughly when do they post the list online? And my printed version of my app in the skills section is showing things up wrong (e.g. says can assist instead of can lead, or willing to try instead of can assist) anyone have this problem? I will have to print it out for the fair and dont want it to say the wrong things :frown:
Ahhh just paid my first installment for CA! Just waiting for an interview, silly time of year to do this, I'll be waiting for ages!
