    Hi everyone

Quick question - if you take up a TC in London at somewhere like Halliwells (ie in city but on a smaller scale/more national) but had orignally hoped to work in the Magic circle - do you think there would be any chance of this in the future, or is it more a case of if you start at a firm with 'lower' prestige that you can't really end up at somewhere like A&O later on? (or is very unlikely?)

    Thanks

It's perfectly possible provided the work you're doing is of a level and quality which is of interest and use to the larger firm.

Generally speaking, it's obviously more difficult to move from somewhere like Halliwells to A&O, than it is to go from somewhere like A&O to Halliwells, but as chalks points out, it is the sort of work that you do and your aptitude for that work that is really going to determine whether the move is possible. Firms want to hire the best people they can and if the best applicant is from a smaller firm, then that's who they will want to hire. Likewise, a smaller firm isn't necessarily going to want to hire someone from a MC firm, just because they were at a MC firm. They have to have the necessary ability.

During my work experience at SC/MC/US firms I met people who had started their careers at smaller, regional firms and then moved a few years down the line. One senior associate had started at a small firm in Leeds, then moved to the MC, then moved back to the Leeds firm, then moved to a US firm. That said, those people were hired during boom years for Corporate and Finance departments, and it's not entirely clear just how likely we are to return to those levels of work.
