Learning to play the organ but finding it difficult watch

I've passed my Grade 8 Piano and I'm now learning to play the organ. However, I'm finding it really difficult. I'm finding it really hard to use both the pedals and the keyboard and all the stops. Considering that I've passed my Grade 8, should I be finding the organ an easy instrument to learn or is it down to incompetence on my part that I can't get to grips with the organ?

No, but I practice in a church near me.

Why should it be in Health and Relationships? It's about a musical instrument?

    &

Ignoring the euphemism, OP the organ is quite a lot different from the Piano. How long have you been playing? It might just be taking time to get used to it.

You got to grade 8 at Piano. I got to grade 2 so you're better than me!

Don't beat yourself up for not progressing in three lessons. Just take your time. They're similar instruments but a whole lot different at the same time.

You might be grade 8 but not superwoman. See how you improve after more lessons and enjoy it.

Thanks. That's very kind of you.

Anyone else got an opinion? Please be honest, I can take critism. Thanks.

I can play guitar pretty well.
    I can't play bass for ****.

It's all a matter of practice. If I played bass more, I'd get good at it, probably quicker than I progressed with guitar. I'd dare say you're the same.

Edit: And this thread immediately made me think of one of the most dodgy porno plot lines I've ever seen...

It takes a lot of getting used to - but I started the organ when I was 13, barely tall enough to reach the pedals and swell box.

Best to use the Oxford course on playing the organ, its good for technique, but once you move on to playing more period pieces, such as Jogen, Dubois, Vierne etc the technique changes.

It's a very different instrument and comes with practice. It's probably just down to not being used to using your feet and reading three staves at the same time. I'd imagine about a year down the line and you'll be playing Bach's slightly moderate stuff like BWV 565 with reasonable competance.

Oh yes - make sure you are comfortable with finger substitution above anything else before moving on from scales etc otherwise your music will end up disjoined, unsynchronised, and legato will become impossible.

i know pretty much **** all about musical instruments, but my bro plays all sorts, if you are finding it difficult to do everything at once then take your time with it, get used to the way the organ plays with just your hands and all the stops, then when you get more confident like that start using your feet as well

after passing my grade 8 piano i took up a couple of new instruments because i wanted a new challenge

it sounds like everythings going well in terms of your learning curve at the moment

i say this because being grade 8 in piano was massively helpful to me in some respects but in others it was irrelevant

so although being grade 8 in one instrument is likely to speed up the general learning curve, it doesn't mean that you'll be really good really fast at any new instrument you try (2 years ago, after passing grade 8 piano, i started learning the violin and am still taking my time working towards grade 4 for example)

so enjoy playing the organ, know that you have an advantage but don't expect it to happen straight away

    good luck
