I've recently been trying to get into Uni via clearing. I didn't apply earlier on so I'm going straight into clearing. I'd been emailing my chosen Uni, discussing my options and explaining that I didn't have a reference and asking if it would be okay. I suddenly stopped getting replies so I decided to go down to the Admissions office in person (I live locally). I spoke to someone there who seemed to be in charge of admissions, he told me that I had sufficient grades and said he would accept my request officially through UCAS next week.

It seemed that while I had been out speaking to the admissions people in person, my E-mails had been forwarded by the general Admissions people to the Course specific Admissions tutor. They E-mailed me saying I would need to submit a reference to get in, contrary to what I had just been told by the general admissions guy.

So, is that guy going to accept my offer next week or can the admissions tutor for my course over-rule him? It seems unfair if that is the case since I've already been told I'm in. What do you reckon?

You cannot formally be accepted until the 20th of August when clearing starts I believe...

The course admissions tutors are the final decison-makers usually, as long as they are not over-ruled by a university level body redistributing the places because of a glut of applicants.

If your admissions tutor says you need a reference, you need a reference, and your informant was optimistic in suggesting you didn't.

And, they are making you a Clearing offer which you may or may not decide to accept, not the other way round! So, I would get that reference organised if I were you.
