Braces: Are they really that goofy??

I want to get braces this summer. My teeth are not that crooked, and most people dont notice there's anything wrong with them until I them...or they get too close..at least i feel they notice. But it constantly makes me feel insecure. But I am also going to university next year, and cant decide whether to get braces because of this...will I feel even more insecure? Will no-one go out with me?!!!!(i know I sound like a child, but that's what I feel!)
And it will cost me sooo much as well, will have to work all summer just to pay for it. But I cant help but thinking it is a neccessity.

Help!! Should I get them...and feel insecure for a year...one of the most important in my life in terms of social life & fun..or should I not, and feel insecure in myself..again. Are braces at this age (18) so goofy that boys would run a mile?

Nope of course they're not! :smile:

Lots of people our age have braces and it's perfectly normal. And yes, people will still go out with you! :biggrin:

However, my best friend is 18 and absolutely hates her braces. They have destroyed her confidence and she is really unhappy. She hated them so much she went to the dentist to ask if she could have them removed because even though they were improving her teeth, they were making her feel much worse. Her dentist wouldn't let her though and pressurised her into keeping them.

I don't want to scare you though... I guess it depends how much you think it would affect you. My friend never wanted hers in the first place, so it might be ok for you as you know you want them!

hey what about people who actually do need braces....such as myself i have wore them 4 nearly 2 years and think about it you'll be wasting valuable time for other patients who really need them.... however if u feel insecure u could arrange an appointment with an orthodontist to see if you could have a retainer rather than a fixed brace!

people will go out with you i dont know where those thoughts come into being at all..... and braces at the age of 18 arent goofy nor at any age r goofy! I know a girlw hos at her 2nd yr in uni n she started 2 wear braces she does not feel goofy in any way, her love and sex life has also not suffered either xoxo

i have them right now. and i am 18 :eek:

i feel a little insecure with them, cos they are metal, not the new clear ones u can get. but its not all that bad, most people at my school had braces so they know what i am going through.

if u can, ask for the colourless ones to make it less noticable :top:

i think braces are horrible. my little sis had those huge ones so i abused her for a while calling her "metal mouth" (yes, i'm harsh). now she's got a retainer which she leaves all over the place (ewww). i saw a retainer by my boyfriend's bed and i was like "bleuh". i'm not impressed with a 19 year old with braces. fix them now before you get any older!

edit: it's better to have braces for a few months than wonky teeth forever.

i lived with mine for 4 years- if I'd known i would have em for that long, i still would've had them so yeah- go for it!!! smile!!! :biggrin:

So many of my friends have braces. There were 15 standing around at lunch, and 12 had braces. They're nothing to be worried about.

I'm not looking forward to mine.

I don't NEED them except for on a personal, superficial basis. I have to have an operation on my upper mouth area to actually have the damn things, which I'm not looking forward to. Extracting a lot of bone from the area, and then shoving braces on for two years.

Was offered them at 14, but that was when I started liking boys, and decided no boy would like me if I had braces, and so declined it. Stupid.

I'm not looking forward to them at all, but I'd rather have them than a lifetime of wonky teeth.

The best-looking girl I've ever known had braces. They did little to impede my infatuation. I assume she no longer wears them, but I've not seen her for two years.

i have braces...
they're not as bad as people say they are...
it feels kinda good having a machine in your mouth...
if you get the new-type ones that cover your teeth completely it'll look as if you have metal teeth! powerful! ...or you can get the see-through ones.
you have to pay for those i think...

my teeth weren't that wonkey either...
had 'em on since Nov 04, getting them off on 5th June 05...
and no, they won't hurt (much)...

I know..i had braces like 5 years ago. But I was STUPID enough not to wear my retainers for more than a month! That's what makes me wanna get them more..becauee i used to have good teeth before..now that its starting to go back, I keep thinkg people will look at me differently( yes, I am paranoid)
I probably will get them now..just hope they don't ruin my first year of University!!!
Hey, how comes it matters so much if you just wear them for about say 4 months..or until your teeth look good, and then wear retainers at night or something? Why is it so crucial to wear them for a year..or dont you?
