I tend to wear brown eyeliner instead of black during the day.

I'm not sure if this is what you meant but i draw my eyeliner along my botton lash line and blend it, whereas some people draw the line on the flesh line above the lashes. It gives a much more natural look.

They might just be wearing mascara with no eyeliner.

It takes lots of practice...and lots and lots of cotton swabs :p:
If you have trouble making a thin line you can always tidy up the wider line with cotton swabs.. you'll get the hang of it eventually

    - Keep the pencil sharpened so you get a nice precise line close to the lashline.
    - Not all pencils are equal! Choose one that's soft & pigmented - avoid ones that are hard and waxy.
    - Use a cotton swab or, better yet, a "pencil brush" to smudge along the line to get a natural, softened finish. MAC's 219 brush is a great for this, or if you're on a budget, ELF's Smudge brush is only 3.50 and nearly as good
    - Unless you're darker-skinned, choose a dark brown instead of black for a more natural looking daytime colour
