What are the job opportunities like in the local area?
Local Area? errrr... Loads of job opportunities. The town/city centres next to each other have loads of shops looking for staff, plus many students are able to get tranfers from existing jobs to the stafford/stoke/hanley branches.

Next to the stafford campus is a company called rouge recruitment who find loads of students work, ok its a temping agency and may not be the most fun stuff but its work.

There's also the Students union who you can work for. Again the pay is complete crap but the hours are very well suited to students and based around what lectures/tutorials you have. For the SU you can work in a shop/juice bar, receptionist, promotional work, in the venues (eg. bar work or glass collecting). The SU will be at the freshers fayres during freshers week recruiting for jobs.

Alton Towers also hires loads of students working on park with jobs such as: F&B, Retail, Rides, Customer Exp, Cleaners. They also take on students up the hotels to work in the bars, reception, lifeguarding, cleaining etc.

You can also work for the university who pay pretty good, a hell of a lot more than the SU. things like as a Student Ambassador helping out on open days and raising aspirations of higher education with WP Students accross the West Midlands. Or again more cleaning/housekeeping jobs, or working in the kitchens of the on-campus restaurants.

There will be a Jobs fair in October where loads of companies come to uni offering jobs they have to students both immediate starts and christmas temps. This is organised by the JobShop which is one of the many services offered by the Careers Center.

I would say 80% of people i know have managed to get a job in the local area, the remaining 20 either had rich parents so didnt need a job, never left their rooms due to world of warcraft commitments thus making a job unattainable or just bone idle wanting a job but not doing much looking and expecting a job just to be handed to them on a golden plate.

Yes!! i know cos i spent weeeeeks phoning companies both locally and nationally trying to get them to come to the Summer work fair. I used to work for the Careers Service. It's free for both Students and Companies to attend so a win/win situation.

Thanks for all the information you provided. I feel a lot more confident about being able to find a job now. Would I have to settle in before I applied to the SU or can I do it from the start?

    Whats the social scene like?

I want to make friends and stuff, socialise etc etc, DRIIIIIIIINK, but I really dislike clubbing solely cause I hate dancing Its been all fine and well up til now, I've been under the legal age limit for it so it hasn't really been a problem (I've still gone to a few, hence why I can say i dont like it lol), and house parties have been enough, but is this all likely to change at Staff?

    Cheers.

There are quite a few pubs in the town centre where people don't really dance. But you don't have to dance in clubs, I don't

Are there many bars? Like places where they sell proper drinks i.e. Cocktails. Went to a casino the other night and they had a proper nice bar area.

Casa is probably the most 'posh' place you'll get in Stafford so they will most likely sell cocktails.

I don't even know and my Uncles best mate owns the place Been in there plenty of times as well!

I got a letter in the post today from the SU and it had a little booklet with it called 'See it Do it Live it' which gives you a little information about the area. I must say I didn't know half these bars existed and haven't eaten at most the places lol. The shops especially- i got shopping in Stafford all the time but I haven't heard of most the shops mentioned!
