'teach yourself psychology' from the 'teach yourself' range is a good simple overview. I bought it for they parents so they could see what sort of stuff id be covering and i found it a good read myself. i think it was £9.99 softback from wasterstones.

Read the Psychology Review! I don't want to take psychology at university level or anything but I think it's a really fascinating read. It uses psychological theory to explain real life situations e.g. anger management, law of attraction etc.

Also try and get an A level book, as a lot of the 1st year will be introductory and going over things studied in Psychology A level.
