Former Labour and Opposition leader, John Smith, who many touted as a future Prime Minister, lost his life in 1994. He was seen to be a man of real morals and values, much like post-war Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, Britian's most-liked former PM.

So, do you think John Smith would have been todays Clement Atlee?

In terms of politics, I don't think so, I think Michael Foot would have been closer to Attlee.

I suppose John Smith was well liked though, certainly more than Foot, and a lot more than Kinnock, Blair and Brown.

From what I've heard of him he was a very nice chap. Just, as I've also heard, Atlee was.

Don't know much of his politics though.

If he had lived, I think he could have become PM. He, like Blair prior to 1997, was popular and he was reforming the Labour party to make it more electable. The fact people disliked John Major's government also would have helped him.

As for his policies, there may not have been much difference between him, Blair and Brown, but we'll never know for sure. I think when he was leader he was willing to accept some of Thatcher's economics, so in that sense there was no difference.
