Francine checked the website and emailed homerton school of health studies to confirm if they really are doing that Nursing thingy.....she said thank you very much...she can't wait to get into a good uni.... **duh**
she's also considering going to nottingham, although her 1st choices are cambridge + oxford **woooooooo** :P

Just to point out, you can't apply to both Oxford and Cambridge if it's your first degree.

nursing degrees are available at Homerton (which, TBH is miles away anyway) from my knowledge they are not part of the university and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get a BA+honourary MA for studying it there.

They do not, and I think that Notts does a good nursing degree anyway. Canterbury Christ Church also does them, and I believe they are good as well.
Check out thee Times guide to univeersities and nursing will be listed as a subject. I also believe that UEA do the degrees, as do Hertford and some other good places.

You can if you're an organ scholar.

Yes, but I'm a bit bemused by where the nursing degree at the cambridge college comes from if it isn't cambridge?

It's run by and validated by APU. Not quite sure why it's attached to Homerton, but the degree would be awarded from APU, NOT Cambridge. Which is not quite as "prestigious" if that's what she wants.

I know it's housed at Homerton College, but I thought it had closer links to APU????

The links were intended to clarify the situation for the O.P.

Another section of the website clearly states that:

'Though not taking University courses, these students are members of the college and its union, since Homerton holds the NHS contract for teaching and education in nursing and midwifery in Cambridgeshire.'

I don't think he even bothered to follow them though.

Oh well, I'll leave them up. They may be useful to someone else.

This is not meant to be offensive, but if you want reputation/prestige, why the hell would you do a nursing degree? Like people have said, of course Oxbridge doesn't offer the courses, they're not considered academic and subsequently will not lend themselves to being taught there. It begs the question why someone wanting to do nursing at Oxbridge wouldn't rather do medicine.

When it comes to picking unis for vocational courses I'd say you should look at the course NOT the uni as the make up of the course can vary widely and you're better off getting yourself onto a course that you will personally get the most out of. I doubt what uni you went to is that important in getting a nursing job since 1) the country is crying out for nurses and 2) the skills you actually learnt on the course (I would imagine courses with a more practical emphasis would be best for this) are far more desirable than the reputation attached to your uni.

What are you saying about nurses?

My best friend from school was always a straight A student - she's a nurse. She thought about medicine, but wanted a more caring career!

I obviously didn't mean anything against nurses, I think people who manage to devote themselves to something like that are amazing. Doesn't change what I said though.

Yes it does - just because someone wants to go into nursing doesn't mean that they're not interested in academia, or that where you study has no bearing. In todays climate of nurse practitioners, research nurses etc, which university is becoming more and more important.
