    Yeah that.

Don't forget the Delete key; some motherboards also us the Tab key to display the POST screen.

F9 comes up with something, which isn't like the boot menu I'm used to...

    Basically says (in the centre):

Press Enter to Select IPL device, ESC to Exit

    Floppy Drive (A
    Hard Drive (C
    MBA v6 3.0 Slot 0510

No mention of the CD drive, or USB, and no change noticeable whichever I select.

If you can't boot from CD, you'll have to do it the old school way using a floppy disc.

Instructions here if you want to install Ununtu
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManager

If you want to reinstall XP, create a Windows 98 (or XP) boot disk available from www.bootdisk.com, boot up using that and once its loaded the CD drivers, you should be able to run x:/setup.exe where x is your CD drive letter.

dont motherboards usually have a jumper to reset the BIOS too?

    something like this OP:
    http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2006/...mos_jumper.jpg

each one should have a label saying what they are for.
