My class took GCSE Maths a year early and this year we sat the FSMQ. How I wish we had sat the proper AS level instead! I think it's a fine qualification for those who will not continue with Maths to A level but a waste of time for those that will be doing A level Maths and FM.

    Why would they want to.

If they don't choose it, they obviously don't need it.

Learning about dy/dx etc. will not help them if they want to go into History or whatever.

It is still useful though. It shows you have knowledge above GCSE level, really handy for engineering/laboratory apprenticeships which do introduce some more advanced mathematical concepts.

The timetable still had Maths for year 11 and having taken the GCSE the year before something had to be taught us. My maths teacher actually said it would "help consolidate the mathematical synapses".
