The two rankings vary wildly, so I was wondering which is a more accurate measure of a university's "prestige".

They are both 100% accurate, accuracy is not the issue. Look yourself and decide which uses the criteria you think is important. ARWU looks at things like Nobel Prizes- so a dozen people at a certain university several decades ago can vary the rank. THES looks at things like international faculty members, and asked a tiny proportion (usually English speaking and biased towards Sciences) what they thought. I think both have flaws, and 'ranking' world universities (which often teach completely different things) against each other is a pretty stupid idea.

The SJTU is focused more on citations and awards won, the THE-QS is more focused on peer-review surveys. Hence the difference in results. Which one is better is purely down to your opinion of the methodology used.

THES does not have a credibility outside of the UK. It's a flawed ranking.

They're both as flawed as each other.

^ SJTU's criteria are more useful and well-defined. People would easily know that the SJTU's league table is for science and engineering or research. But what does THES would really want to come up with its ranking?

I thought peer reviews and recommendations were the reasons unis become well-known in the first place?
