I am just wondering what the difference between these 2 is, are they just the same thing or do they require different subjects or something?

The BTEC is still awarded. There is a significant difference. BTEC's are really vocational alternatives to GCSE's and A Level's. BEng is the university level of Engineering. BTEC's can be used to help you get into university.
In terms of levels
BTEC = GCSE/A Levels
HNC/HND = First year or two of uni
BEng = Uni Qualification
Meng = Uni Qualification (four years)
I hope this helps

Btec is more concerned with Technologies and application of Civil Engineering method,while BEng is much more tough whereby more higher level math and theoretical design applications are considered. A BEng has more responsibility then Btec even though both courses are pretty stressful....speaking from experience.
