why are they blue/purple if blood is red?
also recently ive noticed them alot more, is this cos ive lost weight so they show more?

You are looking at your veins through your skin. The blood inside them is dark red and it doesn't reflect light very well.

There is less red light reflected from the shallow area between the surface and the vessel than blue light because blue light is scattered more. The surrounding tissue reflects back more red.

Yeah I think that's right. Apparently blood is blueish before it comes in contact with oxygen. Clearly whenever you cut yourself it's going to be red though (due to the oxygen in the air.) I'm sure Foolfarian or someone will clear it up.

Yes its deoxygenated. Blood with oxygen is red because of the iron in haemoglobin and it is blue when it releases oxygen. So you can only ever see blue blood in your veins.. when it comes out it becomes oxygenated on contact with the air.

it's only blue inside you; on contact with air it turns red.

Yes, quite possibly. Also, the warmer weather is probably contributing.
ok i might sound totally stupid when i say this  but i thought that the blue vein was because oxygen hadn't mixed with the blood? as soon as oxygen mixes with the blood it turns red? I don't know, i'm just being a dito lol

The thing about them being more visible because you lost weight, that's possible as I know a girl who that happened to. But you also said that only the big ones are gross, does that mean what you're seeing is the little purple burst blood vessell-things?
