I recently opened a new student account with Ulster Bank and applied for the overdraft.

I went in today to check to see if the overdraft had been approved yet and was told that I couldn't get it as there was something being held on my credit file.

The only problem with that is i've never had any credit on anything before, i'm only 19 and always had a pay as you go phone.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? The bank manager said she would look into it more with the head office, but it's got me worried now as this overdraft would have been a great back-up incase ever low on money.

I agree, having worked in finance for 3 years.
Simply because you have never had credit will make some banks wary about lending you money. They have no history to show how you are as a customer of finance.

If you are curious though you can get a credit report from Experian and I think its free if you sign up... or at most its a few quid.

If they at the end of this refuse to give you the overdraft, go to another bank, they surely will.
