If you visit the vets on the principle that you've found the dog, i'm sure they'll check and run in owners details for free. But if you want to keep the dog BUT check whether it's registered. It would basically be the wrong way going about it. Think the RSPCA must be consulted?

    Aww, that's kind of you
Hmm isn't there a service of some sort where they scan for chips and return it to the rightful owner? If not I'm sure the vet would do it, perhaps even for free

Actually to be honest I have no idea

Vets will do it free. Take the dog to the vet. they are not going to charge you for a lost dog!!
Forget the RSPCA - by the time they get back to you the dog will have died of old age anyway.

It will be free, any vets or animal rescues or even some groomers offer the service. If you don't wont to keep to dog why not contact www.thelittledogrescue.co.uk they never put a healthy dog down and never home them in kennels.
