This internet mess is the only thing I'm feeling gloomy about with regard to coming to Aston...not just for the gaming, but I use Skype to call home and stuff like that. I really hope there's a viable alternative if this Studentcom is as bad as Keycom sounds.

Just use skype in the postgrad lounge, gaming is 90% out of the question though. You won't be able to get another ISP on campus; the uni sells the license which stipulates no competition afaik

Hi guys, i was looking for some major advice really regarding internet - basically with the laptop i want to get, they can include mobile internet and then reduce the price of the laptop .. so im torn whether to go for it or just wait and see what the internet is like at Aston first ..
does anyone know the best coverage for mobile internet in birmingham? and is mobile internet really that good.. like will i be able to stream videos from say megavideo (i need my TV shows hehe!) and use Word at the same time? Ill be in lakeside btw.

The mobile internet will be fairly good it is just the contract you are tied into you should be more concerned about. Sometimes you can stream, sometimes you can't. Games are out though I would say. In two years time your accomodation may already include internet (Unite, Jennens Court etc all do) and then you are still paying for mobile broadband you don't need.

I'm sure vodafone do a rolling 30 day contract so your not tied in to anything.

thats a fair point.. i dont know where ill be living in 2nd and 3rd year though..
Maybe i should just buy the laptop and then see how the internet is when i get there. either way its a lot of expense, having to get mobile internet or paying full price laptop i wish aston would provide wifi in accomodation- i know so many unis that do never mind!

Yes, they all do. The only problem is that those are much more expensive, and I assume it was not what the OP was talking about when she said that if she got this internet her laptop would be cheaper.

    Hey guys,

Colin Shaw (Aston University) wrote on August 24, 2009 at 12:19pm
The University has offically ended the contract with keycom and a new and vastly improved service will be available from this year.

No idea who he is, I just noticed that in the thread mentioned, so looks like it might be alot better this year. So mobile broadband might not be needed. I hope so as I'm an Aston hopeful for 2010 entry. I hear rumours of new accomidation for 2010 entry too

I still never received that email and normally these things are sent out to all students so I'm skeptical.

You need a license if you watch live TV on your laptop but not for anything on iPlayer or You Tube etc which isn't live. I think. It's annoying but if you need one, you need one.

    He's the guild president.

And indeed you hear correctly of new accomodation opening in 2010. When you come for an open day they have a showroom of what it mill look like. Pretty expensive though - £120 a week

Ouch well I can't afford that then. I'm poor. Will there still be other accomidation?

I'm sure I read somewhere that despite all rooms being ensuite there will be different sizes to differentiate prices, so is that upto £120 or from £120?

They are all over £100 a week, I believe they start at £105 or £110 and go up to about £125

There will be for your first year if you come in 2010, as only one of the blocks will have been taken down and replaced with the new building. I think it's £67 a week this year, so perhaps £70 for when you arrive.

In theory someone is supposed to come round if you haven't told them that you either don't need a license or that you've bought one. I had a lot of paperwork in first year telling them I was under investigation cos I didn't need a license. I don't actually know if they do come round though but I'd get one just in case as I heard the fee can be massive. But it's up to you of course.
