I'm starting at Southampton (hopefully) in September and was wondering how easy it is to park either at or near the accommodation? I don't have a permit as I don't have special circumstances.

When I went to look around the accommodation there were plenty of student's cars actually in the accommodation without parking permits. If that's not possible, what's the parking restrictions nearby the halls? Any areas a bit away from the halls that offer free parking?

Please skip the lecture about how I don't need a car, uni-link is great etc. For various reasons I could really do with a car when I'm at Uni.

Ok well to start off with, a week before the halls contract finishes the halls parking becomes free because of the need to have cars in order to pack up peoples things, you can also park there over the summer period without a permit, I assume as it's not term-time and therefore not being used apart from the occassional open-day.

As you already know, you can't get a permit as a first-year. However, there are people who kept cars all year and lived in halls. I'm not sure about Wessex Lane but I know that most of the roads around Glen Eyre all have parking restrictions, however there is a road off Glen Eyre Road called Glenwood Avenue which has no parking restrictions and (depending upon space available) will enable you to keep your car reasonably close-by to any of the Glen Eyre halls throughout the year.

Check the location of Glenwood Avenue on google maps before you go.
