best college for rowing

jst wondering which college is best for rowing - in terms of:

a. who usually has the best crews
b. who has the best boats

i cox for a mens crew so wouldn't mind doing that at whichevr uni i decide to go to (either for the uni crew or clg crew), but i do also row and like double skulls and coxless quads (with my steering in the bow seat) - so having these two boats would be gd!!

is it tru that u can row/ cox for any clg - irrespective of where u go to clg?

Hatfield currently have the strongest college side, better than some of the Uk's university sides, but you might get a but bored with college rowing if you are very experienced.
There's lots about Durham sport at www.sportdurham.com

but if i cox i wud wana cox for a gd mens squad - so university mite be a gd option, though clg rowing mite be cool too

but if i rowed i would wana go in a double or coxless quad - though i am quite weak i still enjoy skulling.... its gd fun

That's usually very hard to do though, unless you manage to find friends in other colleges quick enough before everyone signs up and gets their own crews.

However, let's straighten some things out. Whilst Hatfield may be quite strong, they didn't win the Novice Cup (Trevs won the Mens and Marys won the Womens) - I'm not too sure how they did in the Pennants though.

I'm not saying Hatfield are bad, but Trevs has officially taken part in more events than most colleges - for example we were represented at the Novice Cup, Senate Cup, Pennants, Tyne, Tideway (yes that big one in London), York, Tees, we're also going to Hexham, York (again) and Durham regatta, as well as the Admirals if you want to count that! Trevs doesn't have a massive amount of boats - we have 2 restricted boats for beginners (one mens, one womens), 2 unrestricted woodens (again, one mens, one womens), 3 plastics (generally 2 mens, 1 womens), we have 2 sculls and a coxless double. Though this is A LOT for the size of our college (tiny!).

Anyway back to the matter in hand. It's true that if you're experienced then you may want to apply for DUBC (the University team) and that would be amazing if you like that sort of thing - they go all over the place! However why don't you try coxing womens crews? Marys officially have the best womens crews around (maybe change next year?) and so that would be good for you!

Also, I don't think that many colleges do have many doubles (especially coxed ones) to be honest, so getting into DUBC would be a great advantage as then you'd pretty much be able to go out in their boats whenever you like (probably)!

Any more questions? I know that all of that kinda skirted around the point lol!

Also (sorry just actually read your post!)....I don't think any colleges have a coxless quad - think only DUBC has one (may be wrong though, but I don't ever recall seeing any coxless quads out on the river that aren't DUBC)

And actually to answer your two questions:

Who has best crews? - Very mixed, changes year by year due to freshers and such! Trevs got some amazing crews this year (meee! lol). Very hard to say who has the best crews - it's very even especially since DUBC gets the best rowers from all colleges

Who has the best boats? - Not sure, though Hatfield and Castle do have some pretty boats they have kinda gay names lol :p:

Since when does something's name affect how good it is? :p:

Arnold Schwarzenegger would be nowhere with a name like "Gilbert Picksmickle"....or something like that  :p:

And I never said how good they were, just saying that some like to take pride in the names of the boats  For the record, Trev's top boats are called:

Fury
Pegasus
Swan (girls top boat)

All good names

True. And also I don't have a clue what Castle's boats are called. I was just being argumentative!! :p:

You have poncy names :p:

Got one!!

Your eight (a rowing boat for 8 people :p: ) has an incredibly long name along the lines of....

Lt.Col. A.M. Ronald Somethingy-Smith

I mean seriously...HOW LONG??? :p:
castle has probably the best boats in general (except DUBC), master blaster and king leopold XIV are pretty damn good, often DUBC borrow the king leopold aka "The King" to use as a quad. our plaster VIII isnt a scrach on the empacher castle used to have (someone didnt properly insure it to its full value, hense the step down to the colonel).

castle just spent £1800 on 8 new oars as well.

ustinov has an excellent pair called "double jeopardy"

DARC has a wooden empacher VIII

So has Trevs....though an incident with a Browns Boat ( ) means that one of them has lost its blade :frown:
Why did you have to get the Boat Clubbers started.....?

How did you know about that?? It was Trevs, but wasn't our fault!! We (being the nice lovely college that we are) allowed Collingwood to use our boat which is an ex-DUBC boat and used to be our top boat. Anywho, they took her off, and decided that they wanted to put their own riggers on her...so God knows what they did with our riggers!!

Damn them  :frown:

...that's also the boat that my crew rows in so we can't row until we get those riggers back. Well we can, but in not-as-good boats :frown:

seems a bit odd to not use the proper riggers for it!?

Thats a bit of a bugger, you should demand to use their riggers until yours are found!

oooh just thought, did you race the tees s34? or were you the other heat? as i may have you on video.........

Firstly, I have no idea why they wanted to use their own riggers. I think they have a boat like her but they didn't have space on the trailer SO they decided to borrow ours but use their riggers which were most likely set up to their own preference.

Secondly, no I didnt race Tees. Unfortunately I was in the Trevelyan College VS Trevelyan College race! Yes it guaranteed our college got a win, but also guaranteed a loss :frown: - so we lost. Bit of a shame really!

Finally - Becca, less of the sarcasm :p: - Durham Regatta is going to be amazing, and if you're not down there to see some of the action you're missing out on something BIG!! - It's going to be amazing!!

12.32pm tomorrow, my crew will be racing St. Cuthberts (Team Perkins)...should be fun

Hahaha..nice one, that's my crew but I wasn't wearing the baseball cap - I'm guessing you were talking about the guy at Stroke? I'm at Bow so yes, I get to watch the glorious head-shaking abilities of Matt at 2! Shame we didn't win that one - we rowed really really badly it was so gutting :frown: - even worse that the Cuths crew that beat us were the ones that we knocked out of the Novice Cup!

Were you racing today? I was marshalling by DARC - me and 2 other guys telling people to go along to the start line when they were with their competitors, I was the one wearing the marshal's vest and had the megaphone (LOTS OF FUN!!)....and soon I'm heading back down for another marshalling stint yay!
