I might like to apply to study journalism and psychology at Winchester. Would this combination be good at Winchester?

Is it what you want to study? If so, do it.

I originally applied for this combination at Winchester but later changed my mind to just study Psychology as a single honours. The journalism department is brand new there and looked brilliant when i went to the open day, so if that's what you want to do than go for it! All i will say is even if you do a single honours (i.e just Journalism or just Psych degree) you still get to do a second subject alongside it in Year 1. I chose to do Media. Good luck x

My mate started media and history there in '06. Apparently it was poorly organised between the two departments and he dropped media after the first year. Finished with the single history degree.

    Hiya.

Since I posted the above, the pathways for year one have actually changed and if you choose psychology you DON'T have to do a second subject with it now, you can do it as a single honours straight from year one (I didn't have a choice!). All in all i'd say the psychology department is fantastic, probably one of the best departments at the uni. It's very organised and is well established here, and the student satisfaction for the course according to the league tables is something like 90 odd %, which is really good. The lecturers on the whole are very good, and you get a really good coverage of topics across the course. Regarding facilities, because winchester is a very small university you are unlikely to get the kind of state of the art stuff you might get at the bigger universities or southampton for example. But we do have a social observation lab, interview rooms, specialist software etc. Recently I did a practical involving electrodes which was pretty interesting. If you're looking for EEG and MRI though you'll have to go to a bigger uni, but on the flipside i enjoy the community atmosphere here, and the classes are quite small so it's easy to get to know the lecturers and other people in your class. Most of the assignments are either essays or practicals, which you do as groups and write up individually. It's a challenging degree but really, really good.

The current modules for first year are: Exploring Psychology (I did this last year, it involves psychology from all disciplines e.g cognitive biological etc.) Introduction to Research Methods and Practice (statistics and report-writing skills) Experimental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Psychology in the Real World.

Hope this was helpful! Anything else you need to know don't hesitate to ask me

I'm not sure how it works at other unis but when you choose to do combined honours here, the two departments run entirely separately and you only attend the modules you choose from each subject, there's no corroboration between the two. You have to organise yourself between the two subjects. I dropped media after first year too but I had to take it because at the time single honours psychology required you to take a second subject in year one. I know some people that enjoy media here though. You can do Media Production aswell which is far more popular, Media Studies is only theoretical which is something i hadn't realised.
