At the moment I'm trying my hardest to get some work experience here in the financial capital of the world that is Guernsey. Applied to around 20 firms, with a few knock backs already.

Anyway, I applied for a bursary from KPMG last year, out of the blue they email me and I think I have got some work experience with them. Will this be classed as good work experience for a career in IB or not so much?

    Cheers

It's quite good for someone pre-internship.

Just had my work experience confirmed with KPMG for a week in Easter 2010. Well pleased after all my rejections from the banks.

Well done - it's a good start, and something to talk about in a future interview. Try and get a look into some Corporate Finance stuff, so if you do get an IB interview you can answer the "why this industry?" question.

OP, it's still worth trying to get a few days work exp here and there over summer and xmas if you can, just to broaden your experience. Cold call some small Asset Management firms etc - that's what my younger brother has done instead of a Spring Program... Not ideal, but a hell of a lot better than nothing.

Indeed, although there are a huge amount of firms for such a small island. If the finance industry upped and left Guernsey would be a ghost town.

True true, but if Guernsey upped and left, the Finance industry would most certainly not be a ghost town :p:!

So if I get to choose where I would like to be for the week, where would be the area most relevant to IB?

I'd hazard a guess at corporate finance, KPMG do well in that sector.

Agree with Haz, CorpFin is the place to go, if not, then Consulting. Tax and Audit are not useless though, it's all experience.
